The Surroundings
At about 10 kms we find Fossombrone which still reserves vestiges of roman Forum Semproni. Today it's still possible to see a part of the old Flaminia road with signs of chariots wheels that for centuries passed on it. The archeological remains can be seen in a wonderful museum. It is also interesting the medieval "Cittadella" and the modern city characterized by many Palaces of seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Not far from Fossombrone we find the famous and suggestive Furlo Gorge, already known by romans that opened a tunnel (forulum in latin, that gave the name at the place) to go through the narrow gorge cut by the Candigliano river, a tributary of Metauro river. Among many natural beauties here we can see a couple of bald eagles.
Driving trough the Metauro valley we find Urbino, appointed from UNESCO as World Heritage Center and Univeristy center. Not to miss the visit of Palazzo Ducale built by Federico da Motefeltro, the birth house of Raffaello Sanzio, the Cathedral and "Oratori".
Going back to the coast, at about 18 kms from the Holiday House la Meridiana we find the city of Fano, that still today remembers its roman origins through several old monuments whose the most famous is the Arco d'Augusto. The city, on the Adriatic Sea, allows its guests to enjoy a holidays on the beach and then to relax coming back to our Holidays House in the peaceful countryside. In winter the city organizes an interesting carnival during which lots of candies are thrown on the people and which seems to be the oldest in Italy.
At about one hour by car are located the wonderful Frasassi caves, an under heart world definitively to visit. Recently a new part has been added and, if booked, is possible to enjoy a speleological visit with helmet and specialized equipments!
The medieval enthusiasts can't miss to visit the Rocca of San Leo (where Cagliostro has been imprisoned for several years and then died) and the wonderful old town of Gradara with its awesome Castle where, according a legend, Paolo and Francesca were murdered as described in Dante's Divina Commedia.
At about 80 kms from the Holiday House we find the medieval city of Gubbio with its wonderful Palazzo dei Consoli of XIV century, and the wonderful Roma Theatre. The city is linked to the story of Saint Francesco and in particular to an episode described in the Fioretti di San Francesco when the saint meet the wolf.
